What is osmosis?
OSMOSIS is the movement of solvent molecules through a semi-permeable membrane to an area with a higher concentration of solutes to equalize the concentrations on both sides of the membrane. In simple terms, the solvent moves from a solution of lower concentration (hypotonic solution) to an area of higher concentration (hypertonic solution) through a semi-permeable membrane, trying to reduce the difference in concentration and achieve equilibrium.
What is reverse osmosis?
Reverse osmosis is the perfect filtration process. This water purification process removes the smallest particles from the water down to 0.0001 μm.
Reverse osmosis purifies water and removes inorganic minerals, salts, and other impurities to improve the appearance, taste, and other properties of water where its quality is impaired. The water thus obtained is of the highest quality and meets the specifications and requirements of the highest category.
The difference between reverse osmosis and a regular water filter
A water sediment filter will trap large sediment particles from your water similar to the way you use a strainer in the kitchen. Reverse osmosis uses a semi-permeable membrane that removes contaminants and dissolved chemicals from water.
About the membrane and how it works
The membrane consists of several thin layers or strips of thin membrane/fabric, pressed together and rolled into a spiral around a pipe for draining the filtrate (permeate). The membrane material is semi-permeable: it lets water molecules through but is a barrier to dissolved substances. When water passes through the membrane, the molecules penetrate it and collect water particles in the center of the tube around the spiral. The remaining contaminants are concentrated and washed from the surface of the membrane into the drain.
